Science Fair *Update*
On May 10, 2010, students representing Kapan, Meghri, and nearby villages came together to display their prowess at employing the scientific method at the Kapan Science Fair.
With A16 Peace Corps volunteer Joseph Heffron and his counterpart Lilit Babayan at the helm, and the support of a Friends Of Armenia grant, the fair attracted 37 science projects vying for first place.
Leading up to the event, local teachers attended seminars on how to share the scientific method with their students and incorporate hands-on experiments in their lessons.
Each competing student submitted a notebook reflecting information from his or her individual project and a poster summarizing the outcome, before presenting the project to the competition’s four judges.
In keeping with the spirit of science and learning, Peace Corps volunteers led the students through six experiments as they waited for their turn to present.
The judges narrowed down the projects to select a first, second, and third place winner from among the students in grades 5 through 7, as well as a second set of winners from grades 8 through 10.
The winners and additional students selected for honorable mention took home the big prizes, like BBC Nature DVDs and science kits, but no one left the competition empty-handed. Even those teachers with students in the competition were awarded for their participation.
